Paper session 1: Space Highways – Transportation On And Between Worlds
Chair: William Gerstenmaier – NASA Associate Administrator for Human Space Flight
While the rocketeers get us out of the gravity well, once we are in space we still need to get around and move between our new worlds. From solar sails to nuclear rockets and space elevators, low cost dependable transportation is what will knit together the frontier and leverage the new civilization of space.

10:00 AM

Paper Session 2: Space Architects & Space Habitats
Chair: Gabriel Rothblatt – Vice President, Terasem Movement
While we have flown several space stations, no one has ever built a colony in space, and certainly not on the Moon or Mars. What kinds of construction techniques can we use in each of these new worlds? What kind of facilities and homes can we build?

11:00 AM

Networking Break & Showcase For The Students’ Cities in Space Forum
Walk around and discover in an open forum the design projects the Cities in Space students built to participate in the 2017 Cities in Space competition. Students share their space colony models highlighting the designs and technologies the next generation will use to colonize new worlds.

11:30 AM

Paper Session 3: Bioneering – Staying Healthy in Space
Chair: Omar Fayed – Founder and CEO, Earth Space Technical Ecosystem Enterprises (ESTEE)
The longest time a person has been in space is 437.7 days. Given we are going out there to settle new worlds, what have we learned? How do we deal with radiation, gravities, emergencies? Can we build colonies that protect us from these issues, do we pop a pill, or do we engineer ourselves into something new?

Paper session 4: Space Manufacturing
Chair: Justin Kugler – Business Development, Made in Space
If you’re a million miles from Earth it makes sense to be able to make what you need to do the job where you are. From additive manufacturing to smelting steel and iron, or even growing biological constructs, we must be able to make what we need to build our new civilization.

Chair: Dr. David Alexander – Professor, Physics and Astronomy, Rice University
Without the ability to use space resources there can be no frontier. We simply can’t bring everything we need from the Earth. From asteroid mining, to making propellant from the Martian atmosphere, we must learn to live off the land as we settle new worlds. So how do we find and harvest those resources?
